With the income tax filing date deadline only 7 days away many early filers, usually those expecting a tax refund, are still waiting for their checks. It appears, according to the attached article, that the Internal Revenue Service is swamped and understaffed. I had a client tell me that on a recent trip to the beach, that there were “Help Wanted” signs in the windows of lots of establishments.
Combined with the low jobs report last Friday it seems that, if people can get paid more on unemployment that actually working, they’re not going to go to work. Maybe the state and federal governments should turn off the spigots. Hopefully, some politicians will realize this and take some action.

The equity markets were mixed last week with the S&P 500 and the DOW showing modest gains. But the Nasdaq and growth stocks generally are struggling once again. Last week I mentioned 2 primary drivers of equity prices are earnings and interest rates. The corporate earnings continue to be strong, but we seem to be getting mixed signals about interest rates. And the word “inflation” is making some noise.
